31 Jan: Welsh singer Duffy finds soul purpose

Welsh singer Duffy finds soul purpose

By Sally Browne

www.news.com.au

DUFFY has lost count of how many interviews she's done today. This one could be about her "95th", she jokes.

Despite the hectic schedule during her brief visit to Australia, she's managing to sound bubbly and upbeat. (Her secret is loads of fizzy drink, she reckons.)

Last year was a big one for the Welsh pop starlet, who was born Aimee Ann Duffy and grew up in a tiny dot of a town called Nefyn. It was the year her debut album Rockferry, four years in the making, was released, becoming one of the biggest-selling albums in the world; the year she was nominated for many awards including this year's Brit Awards, inspired countless newspaper articles, travelled the world, including touring the US with Coldplay, and turned 24.

When Rockferry was released in May, it went straight to No. 1 in the UK, where it was the highest-selling record for 2008. (It reached No. 4 in the US and No. 2 in Australia.) Rockferry was the fourth-highest-selling album in the world (behind Coldplay, Amy Winehouse and AC/DC), selling more than 4.5 million copies.

But for Duffy, 2008 was a year like any other on her continual learning curve. "Ever since I left home I've had this big year of colossal learning, so it just felt like another one of those whirlwind experiences for me," she says.

Soul sister

Duffy's speaking voice is light and relaxed – but becomes a powerhouse when set to music. When she was a child, she was kicked out of the choir because her voice was "too big". She got her taste for soul music from watching her dad's VHS tapes of '60s music show Ready, Steady, Go! and reruns of the movie Sister Act.

Meeting Whoopi Goldberg on a chat show was one of the highlights of her year.

Last year she also performed at a charity event with stars including Mariah Carey and Rihanna. Stevie Nicks of Fleetwood Mac was fun – entertaining her with stories on Welsh dragons. But small-town girl Duffy wasn't impressed with some of the other star's big entourages. "I don't like how big American stars consider themselves an exception from humanity," she said then.

Nefyn, in north Wales, is on the Llyn Peninsula where Welsh is spoken. Duffy's parents ran the community centre. Her first language was Welsh, which she spoke at home with her two sisters, one her twin. When her parents split up, it became community news. Her mother left to follow her heart with a former flame, taking the children with her. Duffy eventually left to live with her dad, which caused a rift in the family for a while.

She always knew she wanted to sing, though, jotting down lyrics whenever she could. She still carries her notebooks with her.

"I'm never short of a pen and paper, so I try and catch my moment when I can."

Label support

It was record label Rough Trade that finally spotted her talent and she was introduced to Bernard Butler, former guitarist with '90s indie band Suede. He fleshed out her musical knowledge, loading up her iPod with songs she would listen to on the long train journey home to Wales from the label's London studio.

Butler pushed her to her limits. For example, he asked her to sing the title track Rockferry up by a fifth. "Do this or go back to Wales," he told her.

"I think he'd love to take that claim to fame that he had the audacity to say that to me," says Duffy. "But no, it wasn't anything quite as drastic as that. But he was scaring me with the amount of movement he was making in the chord progression.

"He's a real gentlemen, you know. He's gotten himself into a little bit of trouble in interviews. He doesn't take any shit. But that's what I love about him. He knows what he wants and he goes and gets it in life. It's wonderful to be around him."

The same can be said of Duffy. In interviews she comes across as a real straight-talker – not a wide-eyed innocent. If she hasn't wandered down the dodgy paths of fame, it's because she has already seen the harsh realities of life close up.

Musical life

Duffy may not have had the biggest record collection, but music is a big part of her daily life. She falls asleep to classical music.

"There's a song I like called Clair de Lune," she says. "So I put that on. And I always have the radio on in the house. I always love to have a great moment when your favourite tune comes on and you crank it up for a moment while you're having a glass of wine or something.

"I think a house has to be filled with music. It always has to have a fire. My grandmother used to say that when there was a fire burning you'd never feel alone."

A song she'll turn up is something like Aretha Franklin's I Say a Little Prayer.

"That's like a total real moment on radio, you're like, 'Oh, hello! Thank you!"' she enthuses.

But Duffy hasn't become bored of her own story. If she heard one of her tunes on the radio, the No. 1 selling Mercy, the wistful Warwick Avenue or the defiant Stepping Stone, she'd turn it up.

"I'd probably crank it up and go, 'Wow! How amazing is this?"' she says. Life is still full of pinch-me moments.

When Duffy next returns to Australia it will be to play the V Festival, alongside The Killers, The Kaiser Chiefs and Snow Patrol.

Spotlight

Neither ostentatious nor shy, Duffy is handling the hot glare of the spotlight well. A year of British media attention has taught her that the attention doesn't turn off when the song is over.

"I think that the hardest thing was letting go of the fear," she says. "You know, understanding that there's no point in being afraid."

But there were points when Duffy did start to feel the cracks. At a show in New York, 20 minutes into an otherwise-confident set, she burst into tears.

She doesn't know what made her cry – only that at one out of every 15 shows she tends to get emotional.

Is success all she dreamed it would be? "I don't know yet," she sighs. "I need probably a little bit of time to reflect, but yes, it's definitely good fun at times."

She says the best thing about it is: "The fact that you're always challenging yourself. You're always trying to understand yourself."

And the worst thing? "You're always challenging yourself and you're always trying to understand yourself," she repeats. "It's a double-edged sword."

As for what makes her happy, the answer is a one-word reply: "Peace."

"I think every morning you wake up and you feel so peaceful and relaxed. And then the day starts and you suddenly get flurried with worries and phone calls."

Rockferry deluxe edition is out now. Duffy performs at the V Festival, Gold Coast, on March 29; ticketmaster.com.au

Backpacking Duffy rocks Sydney
By Kathy McCabe, The Telegraph

LONG before she helped to usher in the new soul wave, hit the top of the British charts or scored Grammy nominations, Welsh singer Duffy played the Sydney Hilton's Marble Bar.

One of the hottest new artists to burst onto the world stage last year with her debut single Mercy revealed yesterday she made her Australian performance debut a couple of years ago as a backpacker.

But when she returns in March to play songs from her acclaimed album Rockferry, it will be at the Sydney Opera House and V Festival.

"Actually my first gig ever was here in the Hilton about two years ago,'' she said yesterday, relaxing in the hotel's Zeta Bar.

"I was out here for three weeks visiting my sisters and that bar really kicks. I remember getting on stage with this band who had a Spanish girl singing and five gorgeous guys and I did an Aretha Franklin number, I think.

"It was so much fun and we stayed there until the early hours of the morning.

"Although now I have a big rule about that; you never rain on someone else's parade.''

Before she returns to Australia in March, the assured soulstress will be a fixture on the red carpet at the world's big music awards nights.

Duffy is up for three Grammys in Los Angeles on February 8 and four Brit Awards in London on February 18.

Tickets for her Sydney opera House show on March 26 and the V festival in Centennial Park on March 28.

Soul singer Duffy finds satisfaction in music, not numbers

Posted Fri Jan 30, 2009 11:16am AEDT

Welsh songstress Duffy has been compared to everyone from Amy Winehouse to Dusty Springfield and even Australia's own Gabriella Cilmi.

With her smoky vocals, honest lyrics and old soul sound, Duffy found almost instant success last year with her first singles Rockferry and the smash hit Mercy.

Her debut album Rockferry reached number one in the UK, number four in the US and number 12 in Australia, and has already sold more than 4 million copies globally.

But the blonde 24-year-old, born Aimee Duffy, is trying not to focus on the numbers and the comparisons. She's just enjoying the ride.

"Success is a very funny thing - I don't reckon we ever really feel successful," Duffy told AAP.

"[The secret is] not taking yourself too seriously, and when I remembered it was just about music a lot of the fear disappeared then.

"I didn't want to be the most beautiful woman, I didn't want to be the most successful.

"It's about finding that satisfaction, that one thing in life that's yours, and inevitably I suppose the music is."

Growing up in Nefyn, north Wales, Duffy first discovered soul listening to artists such as Marvin Gaye and Sam Cooke on the radio and was attracted to its brutality.

"The brutality of soul is something that cuts through everything else, or it did for me anyway," she said.

"But today I don't really think soul belongs to a genre, it's just a sense of honesty."

The Grammy-nominated singer is in Australia for a brief visit ahead of a national tour with the V Festival in March and April and a show at the Sydney Opera House.

She will play her first official Australian gig - a MySpace show - on Saturday in Sydney.

Web designing help wanted.

Are you a Duffy fan who loves webdesigning or banner making? Then drop me a message if you want to help me get a gallery sorted. I don't know how I did it but I managed to install coppermine on some free webspace but I'm not too good with PHP but would like a whole theme or at least a title banner custom made.

I know it's possible to take a coppermine skin/theme (i.e. Classic) and mod it into what you want but I'm not familiar so if anyone does want to lend a hand then drop me an email.

24 Jan: Duffy already working on Second Album?

The News of the World have this article about Duffy.

That Duffy-cult second album

THE DARKNESS, SCISSOR SISTERS, ALANIS MORISSETTE — big names who were all victims of SAS (Second Album Syndrome).

And now one of Britain’s most gifted treasures DUFFY must hope (along with rest of us) to avoid the same fate.

The Welsh wonder is back in the studio working hard on album No2.

The good news is that she’s with Brit nominated producer BERNARD BUTLER - the man behind her storming debut Rockferry (if it’s not on your iPod, go download it NOW!).

“Duffy has spent ages writing new material,” an insider told me.

“She knew Bernard could help her realise the kind of album she wants to make. It will have the same kind of retro sound as Rockferry but Dufffy hopes she can hone her sound.”

20 Jan: Duffy live in Athens, Greece on June 19th 2009

According to this article in a Greek newspaper Duffy will perform live in Athens, Greece on June 19th as part of the Ejekt Festival (19-20 June 09).

The article basically informs readers of some of Duffy's success in 2008. The google translate is quite poor I think but here it is anyway.

The Greek public danced her successes, she has a platinum debut disc and set a ringtone of songs. Now it's time to enjoy and live. Duffy comes to Athens for a big concert Friday June 19 - the first big name this year Ejekt Festival (19-20/6). The scene we saw recently in the Brixton Academy in London and was really amazing. With the nostalgic songs of the'60s and the sexy moves of everyone and won appreciation.

Bad lies, if a name elampse the world music scene in 2008, it was Duffy. The success of «Mercy» and «Stepping Stone» played ceaselessly from radio, the debut of «Rockferry» sold more than 1.69 million copies in Britain alone, and the reputation and came up Grammy awards. Within less than a year, Xanthoula singer from North Wales, many hurriedly to call the new Dusty Springfield, saw its dream to become reality.

The story of Aimee Duffy seems like a musical tale. Everything started from Nefyn, a small seaside town of 2,250 residents in north Wales, where she grew up without having direct contact with music. She began to sing blues songs and soul and when she was little edioxan from the school choir because they knew the right places to voice. Never did not put down. For 4 years she lived her own adventure of music, changing buses and trains across the distance from the cosmopolitan city of London just to record her first album. This trip antikatroptizei the successful «Rockferry», which brings the sound of the legendary Motown today. What is success for the same; «To get 50 years and I leave behind me a great number of disks on which to feel proud», stated in an interview in the IP. Information about the emergence of Athenian Duffy, and the venue of Ejekt will be announced soon.
